Course Description
As the population of the US becomes more diverse, the need for culturally competent health care providers has increased. This webinar was designed to help people learn about culturally-competent medical communication. The presenters will share their experiences developing and providing culturally competent health communication that meets the need of Asian, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Island patients with diabetes.

Course Objectives

  • Provide an overview of caring for Chinese patients with diabetes.
  • Explore the impact of ethnicity vs. race when providing culturally competent care.
  • Define the concepts of culture and cultural competency.
  • Identify at least four cultural factors that influence health care behaviors and health seeking practices of Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders (NHPI).
  • List at least three culturally competent practices when working with NHPI communities.
